Tiffany smiled and said, “We will provide plans to defend Kandos from an attacking horde if they reach this far and another two strategies to deal with them at a distance. We will also give you eighty-three additional firearms and just over two-hundred thousand cartridges and shells of different sizes. We will stay for up to five days to help you put the plans in place and to prepare ourselves for leaving.

“In return, we want at least two months supply of disposable diapers, a range of clothes, helmets, shoes and other assorted goods from your stores. I have a full list. Two, I repeat, two B-doubles quad axels. We saw the two we want near one of the truck stops, they look almost new. Fifteen trail bikes and full access to a variety of industrial tools to make modifications to the vehicles. Fifty square metres of solar panelling from houses that aren’t using it and the electrical equipment to make it work. I have a list. Access to the hardware store for timber panelling if we need it. Oh, and a combine harvester. There is one that doesn’t work on that farm just outside of town. It will do.”

Pepper smacked her shoulder and said, “Why tell them that? We could have got one of the new ones. Why did I let you bargain?”

Mark put his hand up to stop their banter and said, “Can I see the lists?”

Tiffany handed them over and waited while he read them. He handed them to Lillian and said, “Let me get this straight. You basically want stuff none of us currently need or want, and in return, we get the plans to save our town. You don’t even want food or supplies.”

Tiffany said, “What type of people take supplies from people who are going to be starving in less than three months if they don’t get something planted soon? I’m fleecing you, but I’m not going to take stuff you need to survive.”

She turned to Pepper and said, “The trick of a great bargainer is to make the other person think they got a great deal. I did that, so now you need to tell me I did a good job.”

Pepper shook her head and said, “I could have got that much.”

Tiffany glared then reached into a pocket and pulled out another list. She said, “OK, Mark, we also want some old grader blades, two large ride-on lawnmowers and two industrial wood chippers. We saw all of these outside the council storage centre and the blades are lying around on farms. Even you have one behind your house. Four, five-thousand-litre tanks, two large council grass slashers, and an assortment of other smaller tools and appliances.”

She handed the list over and beamed at Pepper who very slowly said, “OK, if you get those as well then you did a good job.”

Tiffany frowned and grabbed another list from her pocket and handed it over saying, “Some pull-ups for Kira if there are any in the town.”
